[UPDATED 19.06.2022]
A Net metering P/V Solar installation is agreed upon between consumers and The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (“EAC”) for the purposes of household electricity generation.
Cyprus and other European states are working to meet EU mandates in decreasing reliance on hydrocarbon electricity generation. In addition to several large scale P/V Parks in Cyprus, residential electricity generation via net metering is desirable given our impressive 300 days of sunshine each year.
Cyprus does not possess any natural hydrocarbon sources.
“The three power stations at Moni, Vasilikos and Dhekelia rely solely on imported oil. All three use heavy oil for their steam turbines and Gasoil for their gas turbines. At least, that is until any natural gas reserves are exploited from the Aphrodite and other gas fields.”.Â
Â
The photovoltaic grid-tied solar array allows a consumer to install a number of solar panels on the roof of their residence to deliver any excess electricity generated back to the supply grid via net metering.
The number of solar panels and the energy created depends upon the roof type and previous consumption figures.
Typically a consumer can install a more significant number of solar panels on a flat roof. Assuming a consumer surplus of electricity is generated, this is sold to the EAC as a credit for the upcoming 2-month billing period. And, in the case that consumption exceeds production, the customer is billed the difference.
Note that:
The permitted number of solar panels and in effect the output of the system for each residence will depend on the available space and the total consumption of the previous years. In general, the EAC will approve applications of a solar system that will generate an amount equal to 90% of the year-round consumption. It is possible to apply for a larger system with supporting evidence of future increases in the householdâs consumption.
- The maximum permitted photovoltaic installation output for domestic use is 10 kWp per household.
The new grant stands at âŽ375 per kwp system installed with a cap of âŽ1500. As an example, for 3kwp Photovoltaic system the total refund amount would be âŽ1125 and for a 4kwp system one would receive the maximum âŽ1500. The grant increases by 50% for systems installed on properties located at higher altitudes (as is the case with winter heating allowances).
- The savings on electricity bills after having a Net Metering photovoltaic system installed is a huge incentive in its own right as is the ability to contribute towards a greener more sustainable future. The new and improved government grants for installing a Net Metering Photovoltaic System offer an extra incentive.
The agreement with the EAC is valid for 15-years
The average annual power generated by a 10 kWp net metering installation may yield 16000-17000 kWh of total energy â equivalent to âŽ4000.00 -âŽ4250.00 in credits from the EAC based on their current residential production tariff of âŽ0,25/kWh.
Take control of your energy costs!
Our net metering turnkey service will steer you through all the necessary steps. From a residential survey & installation recommendations and pricing to submitting the EAC Solar P/V application and inspection.
- Collection of all documents required for the application* (see list).
- EAC (Electricity Authority of Cyprus) signed application forms.
- Applying to the EAC and awaiting their approval (usually around four weeks)
- EAC will send the consumer the contract terms and conditions for your signature.
- The signing of our installation contract and payment of 70% of the total quoted amount is due at this point.Â
- We agree on a date with you and install the P/V system. A further 20% payment is due on this day. Once completed, we will inform the EAC, who will let us know when they will be inspecting the system.
- EAC inspection of the installed system in the presence of our Electrician. After the inspection, your PV system will be connected to the grid and be up and running. The 10% balance payment is due at this point.
- We will apply for the subsidy grant on your behalf and follow up until the money is received.Â
Please see below the list of documents needed for your application to the EAC.
- Building permit
- Recent EAC bill
- EAC Statement a 2-year statement provided free of charge by the EAC offices in Polis Chrysochous or Paphos.
- Title deeds.
- Ordnance and topography. This land registry map shows your property’s plot number, usually obtained from the village Mukhtars’, the Mayor’s office or Ariadne Government Portal.
- Cypriot ID or Aliens Residence Certificate (yellow slip)
- EAC application fee of âŽ297.50
Typically we require 2-days to complete a Solar P/V (net metering) installation.
